Julia Schümann

The divergence of externally and subjectively perceived corporeality (2015)

In her study, Julia Schümann broaches the issue of the divergence of externally and subjectively perceived corporeality of the self and the partner in comparing genders. Faces were photographed, recorded realistically and alienated. Afterwards the images were changed, for example noses straightened, cheeks tautened, the corner of mouths pulled up. With the help of symbols the depicted assessed their faces and the ones of their partners. The result was that gender differences exist in the perception of self and the outside. This study makes it possible to formulate tendencies in the perception of the self and the outside in different genders and therefore the divergence between the imaginary image and the realistic picture.
