Julio Zúñiga was born in 1987 in San José, Costa Rica. He studied music composition under Christoph Neidhöfer and Philippe Leroux at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he also took courses in acoustics and psychoacoustics under Brigitte Vachon and Stephen McAdams. In 2015, he completed a Master of Music in composition and electronic music at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden, Germany, where he studied under Mark Andre and Franz Martin Olbrisch. His music has been played in Europe and the Americas by ensembles such as PULSAR Trio (Paris), Ensemble SurPlus (Freiburg), ECM (San José) and Fonema Consort (Chicago). He has attended international festivals and summer academies such as the Schloss Solitude Sommerakademie (Stuttgart, 2015), the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (2014), Visiones Sonoras (Morelia, México, 2014), SICPP (Boston, 2013) and the International Young Composers Academy in Tchaikovsky City (Perm, Russia, 2011), where he has taken individual lessons and master classes with Pierluigi Billone, Brian Ferneyhough, Chaya Czernowin, Claus- Steffen Mahnkopf and Rebecca Saunders, among others.
